Snowmageddon 2018

Happy Snow Day Shorians!

As you celebrate your long weekend, here are some challenges for you to complete. You can complete as few, as many or all of the challenges. Your choice! Be sure to share your challenges on Lake Shore Public Schools  FaceBook and Twitter.

  • Thank Dr. DiPonio for the snow day in your most creative way. Take a picture of a thank you note, sing him a song, create a GIF. Then, follow him on Twitter! @DrDiPonio
  • It's Black History Month. Share a leader, author, or activist that most inspires you. You can use Google search or mel.org to find out more information about the person who inspires you. If you don't have a favorite, explore the Black History page from History.com.
  • READ. Not an assignment, just for fun! It can be an article, a blog, a book. For middle and high school students, don't forget you have e-book options through the school library catalog and with our partnership with St. Clair Shore Public Library.
  • Play outside! Build a snow man, make a snow angel. Have a snowball fight. Go for a walk. Don't forget your boots, hat and gloves.
Can't wait to see how our Shorians celebrate a snow day!

Snow Day Challenge - December 14th, 2017

Good morning Lake Shore!

Dr. DiPonio called a snow day last night, so hopefully all of you slept in knowing you didn't have to wake up for school. When days are called, you'll be get a challenge, something to keep you busy, while having fun, that we would like you to share out with us on Social Media.

Activity #1: Thank your Superintendent for the day off. For Lake Shore Public Schools students, that would be Dr. DiPonio. You could tweet him your appreciation at @DrDiPonio, make a card to bring to school tomorrow, or share on the Lake Shore Public Schools Facebook page. Be certain to include the hashtag #mylsps if posting to Twitter or Facebook. If you're not a Lake Shore Pubic Schools student, find your school's Facebook page, Instagram or the Twitter account of your Superintendent to share your personal thank you.

Activity #2: This activity comes from the "Random Acts of Kindness Advent Calendar".  Today's Act of Kindness is to  "think of a song that invokes a happy memory involving someone you care about. Then find that song on YouTube and email that person a link to the video. You might also want to add a brief note telling them how the song reminds you of the great times you had together." For our super star students looking for more of a challenge, record yourself singing the song.

Activity #3: Read 30 minutes. Your choice! This does not have to a school assignment. Reading to a younger sibling or friend also counts. For our middle and high school students, this is a great time to check out the ebook selection from the St. Clair Shore Public library. If you need help, you can always contact them. They are happy to provide technical support over the phone.

Most important activity of all? Bundle up and play outside! Don't forget your hat and mittens. It's cold out there.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Rain,  on top of freezing rain, has made hazardous driving conditions. In January! Your challenges will keep you inside today.

Challenge #1:

In January, we expect snow in Michigan! How much snow would we have if the rain that is falling would have been snow. Your challenge requires you to
  1. Find out how much rainfall we have received (OK to use a total at your time of research).
  2. Find the conversion formula of rain to snow fall.
  3. Share your answer AND cite your resources for both total rainfall and the conversion formula.

Challenge #2:

It's North American International Auto show week in Detroit . Find your favorite concept car and share a picture (don't forget to cite your source-you can "cheat" by using EasyBib).

Challenge #3:

Of course, you need to read! Today challenge yourself to read something you usually would not. Whether a new genre, or a topic you don't know about. Call, text or record what you've learned to share with a friend or relative.

Don't forget to share when you complete your challenges via Port Huron Schools Twitter @PHSchools, and/or FaceBook page

The Weather Outside is Frightful

For our second Snow Day Challenge of the 16/17 school year, we're going to have to plan inside activities. Blowing snow, changing quickly to sleet and rain with high winds, limits our outdoor time. Stay safe inside while completing your list of challenges. Don't forget to share pictures of your challenges by posting on the blog, Tweeting out using the #1PHASD hasgtag, or posting to the Port Huron Schools Facebook page.

Challenge #1:

Make a plan to change the world. Get inspired by Kid President and share how you plan to change the world, one small act at a time.

Challenge #2:

Make, or help an adult make, your lunch. Don't forget to consider your food groups. The Food Network has a special page for recipes for kids. Bonus if it's an original creation! Be sure to send a pic.

Challenge #3:

Read. This should be your choice, not a school assignment! Elementary students, strive for at least 15 uninterrupted minutes. Middle School, at least half an hour. High school, bonus if you can pull off an hour! Share with us what you're reading. Reading to someone else counts!

Challenge 4:

What song do you listen to when celebrating a day off school? Crank it up and dance around the house. Then share it with the rest of us so we can celebrate and dance.

Dec. 12th, 2016 Snow Day Challenge

Snow falling in a field on an oak tree

The first winter storm of the 2016/17 school year is significant enough for Superintendent Jamie Cain to declare a snow day. And that means a Snow Day Challenge!  As this is the first of the year, let's look at ways to celebrate.

First Challenge

Sleep in! That's right. Early notification means there is no reason to be up early checking social media to see if you have school. Finish up any homework or assignments tonight for a relaxing start to your day.  Many students, especially pre-teens and teens, are not getting the recommended hours of sleep necessary for proper functioning. Use this opportunity to catch up! After you wake up, read this Teens and Sleep article and make a plan from now until Christmas break for getting the required number of hours to feed your brain.

Go Outside

The past couple of years, many of the weather days have included frigid temperatures. Not so today! It's the perfect day to get out side and enjoy the snow. Don't forget to dress appropriately (hat, gloves, coat, boots). Here are some ideas for outside fun:
  • Build forts to have a snow ball fight with your friends and neighbors.
  • Measure the depth of the snow at different areas of your yard. Is the depth the same everywhere? To what do you attribute the snow depths?
  • Shovel your sidewalk (bonus - help out a neighbor, relative, or someone you know who isn't able to shovel snow themselves).
  • Take a walk and observe how different your neighborhood, favorite park, or trail looks when covered with snow (ask permission first!)
  • Do you want to build a snowman? Today is the perfect day for an Olaf adventure.
  • Create art in the snow.

And, of course,  R E A D!

Reading is an every day activity, so no break on a snow day! However, maybe you could read to a younger sibling, or find your favorite book from when you were younger and return to reading that you enjoyed. Or, check out these digital options:
  • If you have a St. Clair County Library card, you can access ebooks, audio books and magazines with your library card. For the youngest readers, choose TumbleBooks (alphabetical in database list ).
  • For young readers, kids.Mel.org has a section that includes story time, games and much much.
  • Teen Ink is a website that features articles, books and artwork created by teens.
  • Port Huron Schools Elementary buildings have subscriptions to an online reading library by level, called RAZ kids.  Students were given passwords by their teachers.

Today Is Your Day! #SnowDayChallenge #ReadAcrossAmerica

What better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday than with a snow day! C'mon, you know what your challenge is! It's Read Across America day. Of course you're going to read. And if you're ready to move to bonus levels, check out your options below:

One of Dr. Seuss' most loved books was written on a bet. Can you name the title of the book and describe the wager? Hint: This book may inspire your breakfast this morning!

      • Find an online biography for Dr. Seuss (real name: Theodore Geisel). What other interesting facts can you learn about this author?

Watch the interview below with author John Green (The Fault in Our Stars).  There are several reasons he mentions why reading is so important. What is one reason he discusses that you had not thought of? How will that change how you read?

Using your favorite social media app (Facebook, Twitter, InstaGram, etc) create a six word story about why you like to read, or what reading means to you. Or get creative and write a six word story book review for your favorite book. Don't forget to use the official hashtag (#1phasd) and tag @PHSchools. Other suggested hashtags include: #ReadAcrossAmerica #MarchReadingMonth #sixwordstory #MichED

Make the most of your day off celebrating reading. And don't feel bad taking a reading break to have some fun outside!

Share out on social Media using hashtags #1phasd and #ReadAcrossAmerica

  • Instagram: @phschools
