Brrrrr....Staying Warm on a Cold Day.

Good morning Port Huron Area School District students! Another weather day means another set of challenges for you to complete. Because it is officially a windchill warning day, all challenges will keep you inside. Have fun learning. Don't forget to share pictures on social media:

  1. Tweet using hashtag #1Phasd.
  2. Post to your official school building Facebook page.
  3. E-mail to rwykoop@phasd.us. E-mailed items will be shared on Twitter and Facebook. Be sure to include the school you attend and your name.

Challenge #1:

Write the recipe for the perfect cup of hot chocolate. Create the ingredient list first, then step-by-step instructions. Consider your favorite liquid (milk or water), type of chocolate, how to heat, and any "special" ingredients (peppermint stick, chocolate shavings, whipped cream, cinnamon).

 Challenge #2 Reading:

  • Perform a dramatic reading from your choice or independent reading book. Find dialogue or interesting part. Use character voices or tone to emphasize important words and phrases. Bonus if you can record and post your reading! (Hint: many cell phones have a record feature).
  • Find 3 quotes from the book that you are reading to share. Explain what the quotes mean to you or why you liked them.
  • Design a new book cover for the book you are reading. Share the picture and explain how the design represents the content of you book.

Challenge #3 Math and Science:

Calculating wind chill.  Use the wind chill calculation chart below. Calculate the wind chill when you get up, at lunch, and at the time that you would normally end your school day. You may use the calculator or the formula on the NOAA site for your calculation. How does sunshine affect wind chill? What is a polar vortex (and are we actually experiencing a polar vortex)?
